The objective of the course is to provide a fundamental understanding of light wave communication systems. Photonic devices that form the backbone of the optical communication systems will be introduced. These include; step and graded index optical fibers that support single and multimode transmission, various dispersion mechanisms, coherent (LASER) and incoherent (LED) optical sources and PIN and APD optical receivers. Both analog (CATV, Radio over Fiber) and digital (SONET or Synchronous Optical Network) transmission technologies will be studied. Basic optical networks will be introduced. The course will also include an introduction to quantum optical communication: quantum optics, single-mode and two-mode quantum systems, multi-mode quantum systems, nonlinear optics, and quantum systems theory.

Participants from vastly differing fields including professionals, educators, and public are envisioned and encouraged to attend.
Lectures will be accompanied by copies of all presented material.
A certification shall be granted to every participant who completes the course.
Course schedule and registration times
Class runs 8:30 am - 5:30 pm each day.
Registration is on the first day morning from 8:00 - 8:25 am.
